Gang Starr was an American hip-hop duo that consisted of rapper Guru and DJ Premier. Though they were from Boston and Houston respectively, the two formed their musical partnership in New York City, developing a sound that embodied East Coast hip-hop. Albums such as Step Into the Arena, Daily Operation and Hard to Earn became influential albums throughout the 1990s, impressing listeners with a blend of hardcore hip-hop, jazz leanings and accessible hooks. Gang Starr called in quits in 2006 for unknown reasons, and in 2010, Guru died of a heart attack.
