Known for his sultry, distinctively low-end voice and smooth crooner image, Barry White was one of the more iconic singers to have emerged from the 1970s R&B scene. Raised in the crime ridden area of South Central Los Angeles, White would go on to develop a strong interest in classical music at a young age, leading him to learn how to play piano and refine his characteristically bass heavy vocal style. Though White would go on to serve four months in jail at the age of 17 after he was caught stealing $30,000 worth of Cadillac tires, after emerging from the penitentiary, White dedicated himself to song craft and was soon singing in various vocal groups before going on to launch his solo career. White released his debut album, I've Got So Much to Give, in 1973 and the LP's distinctive blend of soul, funk and smooth jazz helped establish White as a formidable talent with a voice not to be trifled with.
