After the Smashing Pumpkins officially went on hiatus in 2000, lead singer Billy Corgan decided to make the most of his downtime by starting Zwan, an alternative rock band featuring an all-star cast of members pulled from groups such as Slint, Tortoise, A Perfect Circle and Chavez. The super-group of sorts came together in 2001 under the direction of Corgan, who used his new collaborators to put a more dream pop spin on the epic alternative rock he'd built his reputation upon. Zwan released only one album, 2002's Mary Star of the Sea, and really never reached the level of commercial success one might have expected of a band with its high-profile pedigree. Yet, Corgan fans salivating for new material ate up the group's music during its brief three-year career. After the band's demise, its members, including Corgan, went back to work with their original projects.
