Mussorgsky was born in Karevo, Russia in 1839, and would go on to help shape the face of Russian music. Mussorgsky challenged typical idioms of Western music, striving to build a uniquely Russian aesthetic though his music. Mussorgsky integrated Russian folklore and traditional song into his classical compositions, attributed to the Romantic era. He was a member of a group of promising Russian composers, dubbed the Five.
