About
The Format was an Arizona-based indie pop project comprised of vocalist Nate Ruess and multi-instrumentalist Sam Means. The two were previously good friends who'd bonded over a love of 1960s pop and hence decided to start the band around 2001. While The Format's vintage influences can definitely be heard in its breezy songwriting and catchy vocal hooks, the band also drew from more modern sounds in the indie rock and folk genres. Ruess' carried the songs vocally with a slightly twee pop style that found the band a plethora of fans within the alternative rock and even pop punk communities. After releasing two full-length albums, The Format decided to officially call it quits in 2008.
