The Butchies was a punk rock band from Durham, North Carolina that focused its lyrics on issues concerned with lesbian and gay communities. The band is made up of front woman Kaia Wilson, drummer Melissa York and bassist Alison Martlew, the band formed in 1998 and released its debut album Are We Not Femme?, the same year on Wilson's and Tammy Rae Carland's label Mr. Lady Records. The Butchies released a total of four albums, including its debut and its final album, the 2004 effort Make Yr Life. The band announced a hiatus in 2005, and as of 2011, The Butchies has yet to make any sign that it is making music again.
