The Beta Band, while always lauded by critics, had a hard time finding a consistent fan base throughout its eight year career. A big reason for its commercial failings was undoubtedly due to the band's inability to easily be placed under any one specific style or genre. The Scottish group seemed to value folk as much as it did house, experimental music as much as pop, psychedelia as much as hip-hop, and so on. It was the band's seamless ability to take these disparate elements and mold them into its own unique whole, however, that eventually earned The Beta Band a cult following of listeners who loved the genre-hopping touchstones found in its sound. Led by the underrated vocal talents of Steve Mason, the group's career flared up for a bit in 2000 when its song "Dry the Rain" was featured in the film High Fidelity. Subsequent releases found the group experimenting with slicker production and forays into more electronic music, while never losing the penchant for catchy and memorable songwriting that was a staple of its far too brief career.
