About

One of the more eccentric alternative rock entries in a long line of one or two hit wonders from the mid-1990s, Soul Coughing actual maintained a solid catalog that went beyond its fleeting mainstream exposure. The New York City-based group brought a wide range of sounds pulled from jazz, blues and funk to the table, which when combined with chief songwriter Mike Doughty's oddball tunes, made for a unique hybrid style. The band's rhythm section, comprised of bass player Sebastian Steinberg and drummer Yuval Gabay, formed its formidable backbone with a strong grasp of dynamics and impressive stylistic range. Soul Coughing scored a couple of radio hits with "Super Bon Bon" in 1996, and later "Circles" in 1998. The band broke up in 2000 due to disputes regarding royalties, but all four of its members have remained highly involved with the music industry ever since.
