Rocío Dúrcal (1944-2006) was a singer and actress from Madrid, Spain who became most famous in Mexico, and was often called "the most Mexican of all the Spaniards." Discovered at the young age of 15, the Spanish-speaking public was immediately captivated by the young woman's vocal talent and on-stage charisma. As Dúrcal became more and more famous, she decided to focus 100% on her singing career in the 1970s, choosing to champion the ranchera style of Mexican folk music. This choice catapulted the singer to national stardom in Mexico, despite being a Spaniard, and Rocío Dúrcal is now generally considered to be one of the greatest female performers of Mexican ranchera in recent history.
