About
Singer Marva Wright was born in New Orleans and is still referred to as The Blues Queen of New Orleans. Her singing career began in the gospel choir of her parents' church, where her mother was the pianist and fellow vocalist. Despite her natural talent, Wright did not turn to music as a profession until she was nearly 40 years old in 1987. She made her first recording "Mama, He Treats Your Daughter Mean" in 1989, during a live show at Tipitina's in New Orleans. Wright released her first album Heartbreakin' Woman, in 1991, and was signed by Virgin Records in 1993. The label released her sophomore album, Born With the Blues, internationally in 1993, exposing her powerhouse vocals to the world. After Hurricane Katrina destroyed her house and all of her possessions, Wright released her final album in 2007, After The Levees Broke, which included blues ballad versions of Sam Cooke's "A Change is Gonna Come" and Willie Nelson's "Crazy."
