Mac Dre was a San Francisco Bay Area rapper who began his career in the late-1980s. While he was recording his first album, Dre was charged with conspiracy to commit bank robbery and sentenced to five years in prison in 1992. Though some might be daunted by serving time in a federal corrections institution, Dre managed to lay down part of his album by having producers record his rhyming over an inmate telephone. After getting released in 1997, Dre kept a prolific album release schedule and managed to create an impressive reputation for himself in California, especially in the hyphy community. Tragically, in 2004, Dre was shot and killed in a freeway shooting in Kansas City, Missouri.
