Ethel Merman (1908-1984) was an actress and singer from Queens, New York who was best known for her powerful voice and contributions to the popularization of musical theater, particularly musical comedy in the United States. Originally brought to fame by George and Ira Gershwin, who immediately cast her in their famed musical Girl Crazy after hearing her sing on of their most famous songs "I Got Rhythm." This would begin a long, successful career as a leading lady for the Gershwins, and later, as one of the most revered female talents on Broadway.
