As a young child born in Germany, Felix Mendelssohn was unusually gifted at playing the piano. His prodigal talent was easily apparent but his parents had higher hopes for their son than becoming a starving and debt-ridden musician. They would have liked him to become a lawyer or a physician, but young Mendelssohn told his folks that he had his dreams of becoming a high-profile composer. As he grew older, he became one of the more prominent composers of his day. After writing a significant amount of popular symphonies, concertos and oratorios, Mendelssohn has gone down as one of the more popular composers in the world.
