Dire Straits

The English rock band Dire Straits was formed in 1977, during a time when the UK music scene was over-saturated with punk. Dire Straits music style boasted impressive musicianship and refined studio production, a far cry from the scuzzy and unpolished characteristics of so many bands that were associated with punk. The group's 1978 eponymously-titled debut was a hit with critics, although the album didn't find much of an audience with mainstream audiences. Success would come nearly a decade later, in 1985, when Dire Straits would release its hit album, Brothers in Arms. The album's success marked a high-point in the band's career that it could never again replicate and after the release of the group's disappointing 1991 album, On Every Street, Dire straits decided to break up.
