About

Chisel was an emo/punk rock band from Indiana that formed in 1990. Chisel was created when friends and classmates at the University of Notre Dame, vocalist and guitarist Ted Leo, bassist Chris Infante and drummer John Dugan, began practicing together in the basement of their dorm. With previous music experiences in punk bands, the trio quickly transitioned from playing covers to original songs. Chisel's debut single "Swamp Fox/Spike" with Assembly Records in 1991, just before Infante graduated and was replaced by Chris Norborg. The band's sound developed from a pop/punk sound to reflect a modernist approach to music. In 1995, the new trio released its debut album Nothing New, which featured recordings with Guy Picciotto and Fugazi, but Chisel earned its following with the release and supporting tour of its 1996 album, 8 a.m. All Day. Despite musical growth and experimentation with Britpop and new instruments, Chisel disbanded in 1997 and canceled its planned West Coast and European tours.
