Taking a break from their usual duties as two-thirds of Blink-182, Tom DeLonge and Travis Barker formed Box Car Racer as a side-project in 2002. Although the band's slick, pop-infused version of punk rock and nasally vocal delivery immediately calls to mind their flagship project, DeLonge and Barker used Box Car Racer as a medium for penning some darker, more serious lyrics than the often juvenile ones Blink-182 is known for. The two recruited lead guitarist David Kennedy of the band Hazen Street, and touring bass player Anthony Celestino to complete the lineup. Box Car Racer's run lasted only a year, but it managed to a release a self-titled album in that period, and is generally well-regarded as a satisfying sidestep amongst Blink-182 fans who appreciate more mature lyrical content.
