Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli (1920-1995) was a classical pianist from Brescia, Italy who is considered one of the most important Italian pianists as well as one of the world's greatest pianists of the 20th Century. His playing was celebrated by several of the great pianists still living during his youth, such as Arthur Rubinstein and Alfred Cortot, particularly for his colorful expressiveness combined with a precise technique. With a recorded output of piano music that is treasured by connoisseurs of the standard repertoire, Michelangeli is also known for his rediscovery of the piano works by Catalan composer Frederico Mompou, which he has also recorded extensively.
