3rd Bass (years active: 1987-1992) was an American hip-hop group from New York City that became well-known for being one of the first successful interracial hip-hop groups. 3rd Bass' debut album, The Cactus Album, proved to be an unprecedented commercial and critical success for the band, leading many to believe that the diverse group could become a major player as hip-hop became more and more accepted by mainstream audiences. However, an unexpected shake-up of the group's line-up led many of its fans to realize that 3rd Bass would probably never match the success of its debut, and in 1992, the remaining members of the band decided to go their separate ways.
