16 Horsepower (years active: 1992-2005) was an alternative country band from Denver, Colorado that gained tremendous success by infusing strong religious and spiritual themes into a more cerebral brand of country music. Beginning with the band's internationally celebrated debut album Sackcloth 'n' Ashes, 16 Horsepower's musical style and songwriting continued to evolve and change over the years--honing more on a darker style of spirituality-tinged storytelling in its later albums. Due to conflicts of vision within the band, 16 Horsepower ultimately disbanded in 2005, with many of its members moving on to perform with other successful alternative country acts.
