Michel Portal is a jazz musician and composer from Bayonne, France, who is renowned for his free jazz style. A saxophonist and clarinetist, he is often considered a pioneer of the modern European jazz sound. Well-versed in classical music as well as jazz, he is perhaps best-known for his film scores and for his free improvisation group, New Phonic Art.
