Fusing gypsy folk with an anarcho-punk sensibility, Blackbird Raum is a five-piece street band from Northern California. The band is a staple around its hometown of Santa Cruz, with its acoustic instrumentation format allowing it to set up shop at any convenient location. Using banjo, washtub bass, mandolin, saw, accordion and washboard percussion, Blackbird Raum creates lively and ramshackle music that is just as much about the passionately energetic spirit behind it as it is the songwriting itself. The band's members all shout loudly along with each songs lyrics, giving the group a distinctly communal and punk rock feel. Blackbird Raum has recently developed a strong enough reputation to warrant finding itself on some notable bills across the country, performing with the likes of Jason Webley and other like-minded artists.
