About

The UIC Flames play in the Windy City and as a member of NCAA Division I sports, they play in the Horizon League. The teams take their name as a reference to the Great Chicago Fire and the red flame color in the uniforms is also influenced by the tragedy of 1871. Both men's and women's sports include basketball, cross country, gymnastics, tennis, swimming and track, but the women also have a volleyball and softball team. The women's tennis team has dominated the Horizon League, where it has won the title more than 14 times. Moreover, Curtis Granderson of MLB's New York Mets once swung the bat at UIC and during this time, the men's baseball team was the most formidable opponent in the Horizon League, when it won nine consecutive titles from 2001-2009.
