Spain is an alternative rock band that emerged out of Los Angeles in 1993. Formed by Josh Haden, the band was on one of the pioneers of slowcore, also known as sadcore, an offshoot of alternative and indie rock that utilizes minimal arrangements, slow tempos and oftentimes bleak lyrics. After releasing its debut LP, 1995's The Blue Moods of Spain, the group collected a cult following and embarked on international tours throughout Europe and Australia. Despite major lineup changes, Haden recharged Spain in 2007 with a new group of musicians and released the band's first full-length album in over a decade, The Soul of Spain, in 2012.
