Barrence Whitfield is an R&B singer from Jacksonville, Florida, who is best-known as the front man of Barrence Whitfield & the Savages. Getting his start in gospel choirs around the East Orange, New Jersey area, he developed a soulful sound as well as a reputation for his spirited live performances. After releasing his acclaimed self-titled debut album in 1984, along with the Savages, he earned a deal with Rounder Records and dropped a follow-up LP, Dig Yourself, with the imprint in 1985. Whitfield released his last record with his long-time backing band in 1995, and went on to collaborate with other outfits before reuniting Barrence Whitfield & the Savages in 2010.
