Though many consider This Mortal Coil to be a band, it really wasn't. Formed in 1983 by Ivo Watts-Russell, impresario of the well-respected UK post punk label 4AD, This Mortal Coil started as a means for artists on his label to experiment and do things that would previously not be expected from them. With a nearly nonstop succession of musicians coming through the band's revolving door policy save for Watts-Russell and producer John Fryer, This Mortal Coil made a characteristic style of gothic dream pop and recorded three LPs before the idea of the group was dissolved in 1991.
