About
Mariss Jansons was a conductor and professor from Riga, Latvia who began his career in the early 1970s as an Associate Conductor for the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra, following in the footsteps of his father, who was the assistant to famed conductor Yevgeny Mravinsky. After spending nearly a decade as a conductor for the Leningrad Philharmonic, Jansons joined the Oslo Philharmonic, where he stood as its principal conductor for over two decades. With the Oslo Philharmonic, Jansons performed and recorded some of his best work with the orchestra until 2000, when he resigned to pursue directorships at various orchestras throughout the world.
