Blending its base of soulful hip-hop with healthy amounts of thrashy rock and funk, Broken Tongues is a lively alternative rap group from Denver. The six-piece uses a live instrumentation backbone full of drums, guitar, keyboard and bass in creating its songs, and its obvious affinity for classic rock stylings and funk rhythms gives it a broad crossover appeal that can resonate with several different pockets of listeners. Brothers Zach and Mike Warkentin founded Broken Tongues in 2008 heavily inspired by both the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the independent hip-hop of groups like Atmosphere. The band has managed to bridge the gap rather successfully and has enjoyed a strong following throughout Denver as a result.
