Hamlet (opera)

The French were enamored by Shakespeare’s Hamlet, adapting multiple play versions, and finally as an opera by Ambroise Thomas. The opera version is different from the original play, based more heavily off of Alexandre Dumas’ adaptation. Certain details and characters were removed, while other aspects, such as the relationship between Hamlet and his love Ophelia, and the betrayal of Gertrude, were heightened. Thomas’ Hamlet debuted in Paris in 1868.
