Girl + the Machine

Born in Malaysia, but growing up in Canada since the age of 11, Jackie Liew has a diverse background and wanted to showcase this, along with her altruistic beliefs, in a musical form. After responding to an ad put out by a group of Toronto musicians seeking a lead singer, Liew won them over and Girl + the Machine was born in 2004. The five-piece creates electropop with a penchant for experimental effects and no qualms with entering into alternative rock territory. As her backing band shares her sense of altruism, Girl + the Machine's songs are written with positive messages in mind and conveyed just as much through the mood of the instrumentals as the lyrics. Girl + the Machine is also known to play regularly at charity events and benefits.
