The Black Rider is about a desk clerk who falls in love with a hunter's daughter. In order to prove his love, he must first prove his skills with shooting a gun, and the only way to make it work is with black magic. This modern fable is adapted from a German fairy tale called Der Freischütz, by Carl Maria von Weber. A story of love, guns, and strange powers, The Black Rider is impressive not only because of the innovative writing, but also because of Tom Waits' singular musical score.
