Der Waffenschmied is a German-language opera by composer-singer Albert Lortzing. The three-act piece tells the story of the wealthy Count von Liebenau and Marie - the daughter of an armorer. The Count's innate desire is to be loved for himself and not for his title, while Marie is torn between her love for two people. The story charts Count von Liebenau's journey as he encounters and overcomes various obstacles in his quest to find true love. The opera premiered in 1846 at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna.
