With roots that trace back to 1570, Staatskapelle Berlin is Germany's longest standing symphony orchestra and the official orchestra of the Berlin State Opera. Initially established to entertain the Royal court, the orchestra held its first concert open to the wider public in 1783. The modern Staatskapelle Berlin consists of over a 140 musicians, several chamber ensembles and an academy. Led by musical director Daniel Barenboim, who has held the reins since 1992, the orchestra performs concerts, ballets and operas all over the world while also hosting workshops and community outreach programs in Berlin.
