Maria João is a jazz singer from Portugal who is known for her vocal range and improv skills. Blending folk, avant-garde, and electronica into modern jazz, she released her first album Quinteto Maria João in 1983. She's since built a massive discography and earned the attention and respect from the international jazz community. She is known for various collaborations but none more so than with her long-time musical partner with fellow Portuguese pianist Mario Laginha. João dropped her 23rd studio album, Plastico, in 2015.
