Faust is a legendary tale interpreted famously by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe as well as Christopher Marlowe, though the Goethe version is most frequently performed and studied. Dr. Faustus is discontent despite his cushy life, and makes a deal with the devil in order to remove the limits of his knowledge and power. As a consequence of Faust's desires, he destroys the life of his beloved Gretchen and her family. The story centers around Faust's never ending struggle, which ultimately causes angels to intervene as the devil attempts to acquire Faust's soul. This story holds universal truths, which is one reason why it is so frequently performed today.
