Broadway musical 1776 follows John Adams and other American founding fathers and narrates the events that preceded the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The music and lyrics of 1776 are credited to Sherman Edwards. The show premiered on Broadway in 1969 at the 46th Street theater, now known as Richard Rodgers Theater, with William Daniels as John Adams. The first production ran for almost eleven months and clocked 1217 shows. The musical was revived in 1997 and then several times after that. The show has won several awards including a Tony for the best musical during its first run.
