About
Originating in the 1950s as one of the countless bands to emerge in the doo wop genre, The Platters would wind up finding substantial and long-lasting success that has helped cement it as a legendary R&B and soul group. The original six members formed in Los Angeles in 1953, where they found middling success with a series of gospel-tinged R&B singles. Over the years, under the wing of its influential manager Buck Ram, The Platters scored a number of hits with doo wop tracks such as "Only You (And You Alone)" and "The Great Pretender." The group's lineup was in a constant state of overhaul at most points in its career, with over a dozen members coming and going. Interestingly, no one original member has unique rights to the name, which has led to a number of members performing throughout the world under sanctioned versions of the Platters name.
