The Coup

Oakland, CA's The Coup is a political hip-hop group that originally formed in 1990 as a trio made up of emcees Raymond "Boots" Riley and E-Roc as well as DJ Pam the Funkstress. After releasing two albums, the 1993 debut Kill My Landlord, and 1994's Genocide & Juice, the group became a duo with the departure of E-Roc and began incorporating live instrumentation into its sound starting with the 1998 album Steal This Album. The Coup has since evolved into a seven-piece full band with the same politically driven agenda it started out with.
