Suffocation is an death metal band from Long Island, New York that was formed in 1989. Rising to prominence in the metal community in the early 1990s with its 1991 debut album, Effigy of the Forgotten, Suffocation is creates suprisingly complex material with guttural vocals, downtuned guitars, complex guitar riffs and ferocious drumming. With a sophisticated, yet unrelentingly aggressive sense of songwriting, the group's music has been refered to as "brutal death metal".
