Mariah Carey was raised by her mother, a former opera singer, who encouraged her to develop her legendary five-octave vocal range at an early age. Carey made her official debut with Columbia Records in 1990 and has since made her mark on the R&B, hip-hop and dance music scene. Throughout her diverse career in the entertainment industry, she has worked as a singer, songwriter, actress and producer. Her record-breaking albums feature her silky, nimble and powerful voice and a smooth blend of pop and R&B. She has displayed her acting skills in such films as The Bachelor (1999), Glitter (2001) and Precious (2009).
