Karen Michelle Johnston, who performs and releases music under her Michelle Shocked moniker, is a singer/songwriter from Dallas, Texas. Though Johnston initially started out as a punk rock musician in the San Francisco area, sporting a mohawk hairdo and squatting in abandoned buildings, she eventually found her sonic footing with a firmly rooted alternative folk sound. Since releasing her debut album, The Texas Campfire Tapes, in 1986, Johnston has gone one to establish herself as a prominent player in the modern alt folk scene.
