Based on Euripides's tragedy and Pierre Corneille's play Médée, Medea is opera-comique written by Luigi Cherubini with a libretto by Francois-Benoit Hoffmann. The production tells the story of a female sorceress who's married to the mythological Greek hero Jason, leader of the Argonauts. Raised outside the social circles of the Greek gentry, Medea finds herself not fitting in with her husband's company and turns towards the black arts to seek solace. After Jason betrays her with another woman, Medea starts to lose her sanity and plots a revenge of epic proportions.
