About
Awake and Sing! was penned by Clifford Odets and came to life on stage at NYC's Belasco Theater in 1935. The story is about the poverty-stricken Berger family. The burgers reside in The Bronx and comprise of the mother Bessie, the father Jacob, the daughter Hennie and the son Ralph. The story is about the socio-economic troubles the family faces. The play is an allegory on society with the family members divided into realists and idealists. This play received great appreciation on its first run and has been played multiple times on various stages over the years.
