Disney's High School Musical is a television movie franchise that was first introduced to a new generation of musical theater fans in 2006, with the Disney Channel Original Movie High School Musical. Centered on the romance between a popular basketball player and a new, academically-inclined student who take over East High School's hierarchical theater program, the story tackles familiar, tween-friendly issues of following your dreams and challenging the status quo. The franchise has since developed into a trilogy as well as a concert tour, on-ice production, book series, video game, reality series and stage musical.
