When The Chicks first started playing, the group was a humble bluegrass/country outfit that busked and played small bluegrass festivals around the county. After years of mediocrity, the band brought on a new lead singer, changed its format and started playing more "pop" friendly country tunes. The adjustments worked and helped propel The Chicks to become one of the most popular bands to emerge from the country music sector. The group experienced its massive mainstream crossover in 1998 with its album Wide Open Spaces and since then the group has achieved a high level of commercial viability that many bands wish they could attain.
