The Charlotte Checkers have been in the 'City of Churches' since 2010 and the team is an affiliate to the NHL's Carolina Hurricanes. The franchise was originally based out of Troy, NY and played as the Capital District Islanders for three years 1990-93. They then moved over to the city of Albany as the River Rats and played for seventeen years until finally arriving in Charlotte. The team competes in the American Hockey League's Western Conference Central Division and in addition to working as an affiliate for the pro Hurricanes, the club works in the ECHL as well with the Florida Everblades.
