Asani, an Edmonton-based contemporary Aboriginal women's vocal trio, has been captivating audiences since 2001 with their harmonies, vocal artistry, and rhythmic style. Their music is a celebration of their musical and cultural roots, blending traditional influences of First Nations and Metis music with jazz, folk, and blues. Asani's unique blend of rhythms, rooted in traditional Cree/Metis styles and influenced by other musical traditions, sets them apart. Their repertoire mainly consists of original compositions in Woodland Cree and English, showcasing their rich and compelling vocal and percussive performances. Their debut album, "Rattle and Drum" (2005), received multiple award nominations and critical acclaim. Their follow-up album, "Listen" (2009), elevated their artistry to new heights with the collaboration of renowned musicians. Asani performs internationally and has composed music for documentaries, films, and television. They are recognized for their unique arrangement of "O Canada" sung in English, French, and Cree. Each member of the trio, Debbie Houle, Sarah Pocklington, and Sherryl Sewepagaham, brings their own musical expertise and cultural background to the group, creating a powerful and authentic musical experience.
