The state of New York's capital always had a professional ice hockey team, and before the Devils came, it was the Albany River Rats. The River Rats transformed into the Charlotte Checkers while the Lowell Lock Monsters from Massachussets folded and came to Albany to fill the void. The Devils were naturally affiliated with the is NHL's New Jersey Devils and since their arrival in 2010, the club has not had much success, however it has produced several players who went on to have successful careers in the top-circuit.
