About
A Midsummer Night's Dream is a two-act ballet by George Balanchine. Set to Felix Mendelssohn's music, it premiered at the New York City Ballet in 1962 and was soon declared a masterpiece by the masses. The original cast featured Edward Villella, Melissa Hayden and Arthur Mitchell in the main roles. The ballet largely follows the premise of Shakespeare's play of the same name in Act I, telling the tale of lovers and faeries. The second Act stages a wedding festivity in pure classical dance form.
