Set in Segregated America, Naomi Wallace's And I and Silence explores the friendship of two imprisoned women who bridge social divides while navigating a brutal period in America's history. The play begins in 1959 in an anonymous city where Jamile and Dee live, trying to find work after spending several years in prison. It then moves nine years in the past to the prison where the protagonists met as teenagers. Jamie and Dee, while trying to live out a particularly difficult period in their lives, find comfort in each other's company and devise methods to survive.
