About
Emperor and Galilean is a play by Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen. Originally titled Kejser og Galilaeer, this ten-act play is one of Ibsen's longest works. The idea for the plot first came to Ibsen in 1864 while in Rome. He began to gather historical data over four years and started to write the story in 1871. The classic is based on Julian the Apostate, who yearns to bring ancient Roman traditions back to his empire. Emperor and Galilean is divided into two parts comprising five parts each and was first staged in 1896 at the Theater der Stadt in Leipzig.
